Departing from the heart of Cusco, this high-altitude adventure offers a deep connection to the region’s natural wonders and rich Andean culture. As you travel through sweeping valleys and ascend toward snow-capped peaks, you’ll witness a landscape shaped by centuries of geological beauty and tradition.
Along the way, remote villages dotted with adobe houses offer a glimpse into everyday life in the Andes. You may spot herds of alpacas grazing freely in open fields, framed by dramatic mountain scenery. The ever-changing weather—crisp mornings, intense sunlight, and the occasional flurry of snow—adds to the experience, reminding you of the raw, untamed nature of this terrain.
The journey culminates with a guided hike to the iconic Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, perched above 5,000 meters. With time to explore, reflect, and absorb the views, this excursion is a true highlight among Peru’s mountain adventures.

4:00 AM
We’ll begin the tour at 4:00 AM with a hotel pick-up in the Cusco Historic Center. We’ll drive for 2 hours toward the south of the Cusco region. During the drive, we will cross small villages and admire the sunrise over the Andean valleys. Our destination will be the Tintinco Community near Cusipata.
Our next stop will be to take a buffet breakfast at the best restaurant in the area. The meal will help us prepare for the high-altitude hike ahead. After breakfast, we plan to continue by transport for 1 more hour to Phulawasipata. This remote start point lies at 4,626 meters above sea level.
From Phulawasipata, we will hike Rainbow Mountain for about 2 hours. The trail stretches across wild terrain filled with llamas and alpacas. The air will feel thinner as we climb steadily on gravel and natural soil. We will follow a clear path toward the colorful peak of Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain.
At the summit, we will reach 5,036 meters above sea level. The panoramic views will include the Red Valley and snowy Ausangate. We will enjoy a guided tour and free time at Rainbow Mountain for about an hour. You may take photos, rest, and enjoy the incredible scenery shaped by minerals and erosion.
We will begin the descent to Phulawasipata on the same trail. The return hike will take around an hour and a half. We’ll walk slowly to avoid altitude sickness and enjoy the changing colors of the mountains. Once we arrive, we will take our transport back to the Tintinco Community.
At Tintinco, we will stop again for a delicious buffet lunch. This well-earned meal will feature local ingredients and Andean flavors. After lunch, we will drive for 2 hours back to Cusco. We will arrive at approximately 4:30 PM at Plaza Regocijo, close to the historic center.

“From the moment we were picked up in Cusco, everything went smoothly. Our guide explained the history and geology of the region in both English and Spanish, which we really appreciated. The hike was tough but doable, and the support from the team made all the difference. Vinicunca Peru really knows how to take care of their travelers!”
