Get ready for a unique Andean adventure in this Pallay Punchu full-day tour. We’ll take us far from the crowds of Cusco into the quiet province of Canas, where nature, culture, and color come together. Here the climate in the highlands can be unpredictable. Mornings are cold, afternoons can be sunny or cloudy, and sudden rain is always possible.
We’ll begin early from Cusco, arriving at the province of Canas after a scenic drive. We’ll reach the Tintinco Community in approximately three hours. From Tintinco, we plan to continue for another 30 minutes to the district of Layo.
In Layo, we plan to pause so we can explore local folklore, culture, and customs. This small Andean town reflects the traditions of the Canas province. We may enjoy brief interaction with residents depending on time and weather conditions.
Our journey to Pallay Punchu Mountain will begin with a guided hike. We’ll be able to follow a trail offering dramatic Andean landscapes and colorful ridgelines. Our tour guides will assist and monitor any signs of altitude sickness as we ascend.
Montaña de Colores Pallay Punchu is located at 4,700 meters above sea level. This geological wonder mirrors the layered beauty of Rainbow Mountain near Machu Picchu. Known as Pallay Poncho, it resembles a woven Andean garment.
Here we’ll have time for photos and rest while admiring the views. After this break, we’ll return walking the same trail back to the starting point. The descent usually takes approximately an hour, depending on fitness and weather.
A short transport ride will take us back to Tintinco. From there, we’ll drive back to Cusco and arrive at Plaza Regocijo. We intend to return in the late afternoon, carrying memories of Pallay Punchu’s hidden charm.
This is a high-altitude tour, and we strongly suggest acclimatizing in Cusco before joining. We’ll prepare for the cold wind and possible rain with layers or ponchos. Unlike other attractions in Cusco, Pallay Punchu remains untouched and serene.

4:00 AM
We’ll start our day at 4:00 AM with hotel pick-up in Cusco. Our journey begins with a 2-hour drive to Cusipata. From there, we intend to continue for 1 hour to reach the Tintinco Community.
Here we’ll enjoy a buffet breakfast at one of the best local restaurants. After breakfast, we’ll drive for 30 minutes to the district of Layo. Here, we’ll explore local customs, folklore, and traditional crafts.
Our hike to Montaña Pallay Punchu will begin in Layo. The path will lead through rugged, colorful Andean terrain. We’ll walk for 30 minutes while enjoying views of the Montañas de Pallay.
Upon reaching the viewpoint, we’ll receive a guided explanation of the mountain. Pallay Punchu stands at 4,700 meters above sea level. The layered colors resemble a traditional Pallay Poncho textile.
We’ll have an hour of free time to take photos and rest. Our tour guides will assist if anyone presents any signs of altitude sickness. The view includes sharp peaks and vast Andean landscapes shaped by nature.
Our return will be to hike along the same path. The downhill trail may take 25 to 35 minutes depending on weather conditions. Our vehicle will wait to transfer us back to Tintinco.
Later we’ll enjoy a nourishing lunch in Tintinco with Andean dishes. After lunch, we’ll relax during our return drive to Cusco. At the end of the tour we plan to arrive at Plaza Regocijo by approximately 5:00 PM.
The hike is short but moderately challenging due to the altitude. It takes around 30 minutes uphill.
The highest point is Montaña Pallay Punchu at 4,700 meters of altitude. Here many travelers must rest to be able to breathe better.
Yes, altitude sickness is possible. We recommend acclimatizing in Cusco at least 1 or 2 days before the tour.
Travel insurance is optional but highly recommended in case of medical emergencies or unexpected delays.
Basic restrooms are available at Tintinco and Layo, but not along the mountain trail.
It may be challenging for young children or older travelers due to the high altitude and walking conditions.
This is a private tour operated by Cusco Inn, offering personalized service and flexibility.
The landscapes were surreal
This was one of the best tours we did from Cusco, and the small group made it feel very personal. The food was delicious and the service impeccable!
The tour was perfectly planned.
From the hotel pickup to the lunch stop, everything ran smoothly. The views were dramatic, and the colors of the mountain were incredible.
I loved learning about the folklore in Layo
Seeing the ‘poncho-shaped’ mountain up close. Our guide made the experience unforgettable.
