At over 4,300 meters above sea level, this adventure will test our endurance and reward us deeply.

We will hike through stunning Andean landscapes, where every step offers incredible views. Our tour guide will lead us to the shimmering Azulcocha, known for its vivid blue tones. From there, we will continue to Otorongo, Pucacocha, and Alqacocha, each lagoon with its own color and charm.

The Lakes of Ausangate full day tour will also include Qomercocha, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rocky slopes. These high-altitude lakes offer a unique connection with nature and local traditions. We might see herds of alpacas and wild birds along the way.

We will stay alert for signs of altitude sickness as we ascend the mountain paths. Drinking water, chewing coca leaves, and walking slowly will help us adjust. This lakes tour will require physical effort, but the stunning rewards will make every moment worth it.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Tinke – Pachanta – 7 Lagoons Hike – Pachanta Hot Springs – Cusco

We will leave Cusco early at 4:30 A.M and travel southeast by private transport. The road winds through Andean valleys and rural villages. After about 3 hours, we will arrive at the community of Pachanta (4,300 meters).

Here, we will meet our local guide and enjoy a light Andean breakfast. We may try mate de coca to help with the altitude. Afterward, we will begin our hike toward the 7 lagoons of Ausangate.

The trail ascends steadily into the Vilcanota mountain range, offering views of snow-covered peaks and wide valleys. We will follow stone paths once used by llama caravans. Local shepherds still walk these routes with herds of alpacas and llamas.

During the hike, we will visit the crystal-clear Laguna de Azulcocha, surrounded by tall cliffs. Then, we will continue to Otorongo, named for its dark puma-like color. The path will lead us further to Pukacocha, which shines in reddish tones from the minerals in the earth.

We will also visit Alqacocha, reflecting the icy sky above. Our guide will explain the significance of these lagoons to Andean communities. The next lakes, Qomercocha and the remaining hidden lagoons, rest peacefully among glacier-carved rocks.

We will enjoy spectacular photo opportunities with Ausangate Mountain in the background (6,384 meters above sea level). The silence and altitude create a sacred atmosphere in this part of the Andes. We may feel the effects of altitude sickness, so we will take frequent short breaks.

After visiting all seven lakes, we will return to Pachanta and relax in its natural hot springs. The warm waters will ease our muscles after the 10-kilometer hike. We can enjoy a traditional lunch prepared by local families.

We will begin our drive back to Cusco. The ride offers one last look at the valleys and peaks of southern Peru. We will arrive at our hotel around 6:30 P.M., filled with incredible memories.
